Google PhD Fellowship Program for Graduate Students, 2019.

The new Google PhD Fellowship Program is now available on offer and directly supports graduate students as they pursue their PhD, as well as connect them to a Google Research Mentor. Google is currently offering award in Australia, China and East Asia.
The Google PhD Program was created to recognize outstanding graduates doing exceptional work in computer science and related research areas.
Google’s mission is to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful. AI is helping us do that in exciting new ways, solving problems for our users, our customers, and the world.
Applications Deadline: May 31, 2019
  • Scholarship Award: Scholars receive named which include a monetary award. The funds are given directly to the university to be distributed to cover the student’s expenses and stipend as appropriate. The funds are given as an unrestricted gift, and it is Google’s policy not to pay for overhead on unrestricted gifts. In addition, the student will be matched with a Google Research Mentor who we hope will become a valuable resource to the student. There is no employment relationship between the student and Google as a result of receiving the fellowship. Recipients are not subject to intellectual property restrictions unless they complete an internship at Google. Recipients serving an internship are subject to the same intellectual property and other contractual obligations as any other Google intern. If a student is interested, an internship at Google is encouraged, but not guaranteed or required.

Australia

  • 1-year Fellowship
  • AUD $10K to cover stipend and other research-related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
  • Google Research Mentor

China and East Asia (Hong Kong, South Korea, Japan)

  • 1 year prize
  • US $10K to cover stipend and other research-related activities, travel expenses including overseas travel
  • Google Research Mentor
  • Nationality: The studentships are awarded to holders from Australia, China and East Asia.
  • Number of Scholarships: Each eligible university may nominate up to two learners from Computer Science or related fields. In India and Africa, applications are open and we do not have a limit to the number of pupils that can apply from a university.
  • Scholarship can be taken in Australia, China and East Asia, Europe, Africa, India, the United States and Canada.

Eligibility 

These are awarded to candidates from Australia, China and East Asia.
Applicants must meet the following criteria:

Nominated in Australia, China and East Asia

Universities should only nominates that meet the following requirements:
  • Enrolled in a participating university and nominated by that university.
  • Full-time graduates pursuing a PhD.
  • Completed graduate coursework by the Fall of the award year, when the begins.
  • Google employees, and their spouses, children, and members of their household are not eligible.
  • Free Studies that are already supported by a comparable industry award are not eligible.
English Language Requirements: Applicants whose first language is not English are usually required to provide evidence of proficiency in English at the higher level required by the University.

Application Procedure

How to Apply: Australia, China, East Asia, Europe, the United States and Canada

For each student nomination, the university will be asked to submit the following material in a single PDF file:
  1. Student CV with links to website and publications (if available)
  2. Transcript of current and previous academic records
  3. Research/dissertation proposal (recommended length 4-5 pages, no longer than 8)
  4. 2-3 letters of recommendation from those familiar with the nominee’s work (at least one coming from the thesis advisor)
  5. Short (1-page) CV of advisor

Africa

You’ll need the following documents in order to complete an application:
  1. Applicant’s resume with links to publications (if available)
  2. One-page resume of the student’s PhD grant advisor
  3. Available transcripts (mark sheets) starting from first year/semester of Bachelor’s degree to date
  4. Research proposal (maximum two pages)
  5. Three letters of recommendation from those familiar with the applicant’s work (at least one coming from the thesis adviser in case of current PhD). If the recommendation writers want to send the letter separately, they can mail it directly to research-africa-at-google.com. Please use the subject line “Recommendation for [applicant-name]”

India

You’ll need the following documents in order to complete an application:
  1. Applicant’s resume with links to publications (if available)
  2. Available transcripts (mark sheets) starting from first year/semester of Bachelors degree till date
  3. Research statement of purpose (maximum of two pages)
  4. Three letters of recommendation from those familiar with the applicant’s work (at least one coming from the thesis adviser in case of current PhD). If the recommendation writers want to send the letter separately, they can mail it directly to research-in-at-google.com with the subject “Recommendation for [applicant-name]”
